Taking the Grand Pacific Drive

Celebrating three years in Australia with a road trip down the Grand Pacific Drive — Stanwell Tops, Sea Cliff Bridge, and the stunning NSW south coast.

Three years in Australia called for a proper celebration, so we hit the road and drove the Grand Pacific Drive. If you haven't done it and you live in NSW, you're missing out.

The Route

The Grand Pacific Drive starts south of Sydney and winds along the coast through the Royal National Park and down towards Wollongong. It's one of those drives where every turn reveals another stunning view — cliffs dropping into the ocean, beaches tucked into coves, and patches of rainforest clinging to the hillsides.

Stanwell Tops

Stanwell Tops was our first major stop. The lookout point here gives you a panoramic view of the coastline stretching south, and on a clear day, you can see for kilometres. There's a grassy park area perfect for a picnic, and the hang gliders launching off the cliffs add a bit of action to the scenery.

We spent a good hour here just taking photos and enjoying the view. It's one of those spots where you feel small in the best possible way.

Bald Hill

Just up from Stanwell Tops is Bald Hill, another lookout that's popular with hang gliders and paragliders. If you're lucky, you'll catch a few of them soaring over the cliffs. The wind up here is intense — hold onto your hat.

Sea Cliff Bridge

The Sea Cliff Bridge is the highlight of the drive. It curves out over the ocean, hugging the cliff face, and gives you the feeling of driving on water. There are pedestrian walkways on both sides, so you can park and walk out to take in the view from the bridge itself.

We timed it perfectly — late afternoon light, gentle waves below, and not too many tourists. A few photos from the bridge and we were back in the car, continuing south.

The Drive Itself

The Grand Pacific Drive isn't just about the destinations — the drive is the experience. Winding roads, ocean views, patches of lush green, and the occasional wildlife crossing the road (keep an eye out for wallabies). It's the kind of drive that makes you glad you didn't just fly to your destination.

Three Years Down

Three years in Australia and I'm still finding new places that blow me away. The Grand Pacific Drive is a reminder of how much natural beauty is right on Sydney's doorstep. If you haven't done this drive yet, put it on your list.
