It's always amazing what it feels like to get a new phone after quite some time — more than three years in my case. My iPhone X had served me well, but it was finally time to move on.
Why I Finally Upgraded
I would have kept the old phone longer, honestly. The iPhone X was still functional, the camera was decent, and iOS kept it running smooth enough. But two things made me pull the trigger: battery degradation and that damn 60Hz display.
Once you use a 120Hz screen daily — whether it's an iPad Pro or an Android phone — going back to 60Hz feels like scrolling through mud. The new Liquid Retina XDR with ProMotion was the real selling point for me.
ProMotion Is a Game Changer
Let me be clear: this isn't marketing fluff. The difference is immediately noticeable. Scrolling through feeds, swiping between apps, even just the subtle UI animations — everything feels buttery smooth. It's the kind of upgrade you don't think you need until you use it, and then you can't go back.
Combined with the OLED panel, colours are vibrant, blacks are deep, and HDR content on YouTube and Netflix looks stunning. This display alone justified the upgrade for me.
Battery Life
Apple wasn't kidding about the battery improvements. The iPhone 13 Pro is an absolute power sipper. I've been pushing it hard — constant usage, camera, social media, Spotify, a bit of gaming — and it still has plenty left by bedtime. My iPhone X would have been scrambling for a charger by mid-afternoon doing the same workload.
Time will tell how it holds up over the next few years, but early impressions are solid.
Cameras: All Three Are Actually Usable Now
On older iPhones, the ultrawide was basically a "nice to have" that produced mediocre shots. The telephoto was useful but often soft. On the 13 Pro, all three lenses are genuinely good.
The wide lens is sharp and handles low light impressively. The ultrawide finally produces shots I'd actually want to share. And the 3x telephoto is perfect for portraits and getting closer to subjects without physically moving.
ProRAW
ProRAW is a feature that everyone should be more aware of. It gives you the computational photography benefits of Apple's image processing while keeping the flexibility of a RAW file for post-processing. If you edit your photos at all, it's worth switching on.
The Design
Gone are the rounded corners of the X era. We're back to chamfered edges reminiscent of the iPhone 4, which I actually prefer. It feels more premium in the hand and the flat sides make it easier to grip. The weight is noticeable but not uncomfortable — it feels substantial without being a brick.
Final Thoughts
The iPhone 13 Pro isn't a revolutionary upgrade over the 12 Pro, but coming from a three-year-old phone, everything feels like a major leap. The display, battery, and cameras are all meaningful improvements that I notice every single day.
Expect more content from me now that I have this beast in my pocket. Pardon the blurry photos from the old phone — we'll do better from here on out.
